Discussion
Feb 20 2010, 2:03 PM EST
Just uploading some of the email discussion we have had as a group on our plans. I put it up on this so others can add in if they want.Sophie's Email: I will have a look on the 1986 event, but obviously floods occured more along the upper Dodder than in the estuary, there is maybe not too many things to say. Let's see that... David and I are also going to meet Dr Mills on monday to speak about flood maps. It is actually very hard to find proper maps of events older than 2002. Does any of you know where we can find such documents ? We tried OPW, DCC, OSI and the UCD Library. I have attached with this mail the maps we've got for 2002. An other question : what do you guys think about writting a small part of the development of Ringsend. I have several maps from 1700, 1837, 1860, and a few maps from the 20th century , where we can see how the area grew up along the river, and then how the vulnerability was set up with time. Waiting for any comments... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

This is my response to the email:It will be very hard to find maps. We could try and look at old development plans for Dublin which are stored in Richview library but I doubt they published maps after a flood event. Also if the Dublin City Council have documents like engineers reports or waterworks reports relating to the area which would be useful, I doubt any of these would be online and would probably be stored in Pearse Street Library Regarding the development thing, I think it will be good for context but I think our focus should probably be from the 20th century onwards I think the most important thing we do now is develop some form of template where we can research the major flood events and treat them the same so we can compare them. Something like looking at : "how it began, affected areas, duration of flood, damages, eyewitness accounts, response to flood, lessons learned from it etc". If we could make a word document with headings similar to that and basically fill one out for each major flood we find I think that could be very useful. I had a quick look at the Irish Times archive and have found a few useful articles. We probably should continue this discussion on the message board so others can add to it if they have any input. i think the template is a good idea, it will help us to focus. i think the headings you have are good. we could also speak 2 gerald to see if there is anything we are leaving out.

You could ask who built the walls that channel the river. I think this part of Dublin was owned by the Pembroke estate (maybe anyway). They owned a vast area out as far as Dundrum and Merrion. Their records are in the National Archives. You don't have to go there to find what's in them - they are on line if you look hard. you might find something to your advantage in them
