WORK TO DO
We're going to meet on Wed and start to map the different CSO data that we have gotten and get some maps put together to show in class next week.
WORK COMPLETED
Today we discussed what variables will be looked at and mapped in order to best show vulnerability. What we settled on was:
· Finding those <14yrs and >65yrs old (so as to obtain a dependency ratio, that is the ratio of people that may dependant on others to survive)
· The type of occupancy (be it rented or owned)
· The type of accommodation (be it a house or apartment)
· Education (this could be indicative of social class or wealth)
· Those who maybe only moved into the area a year before the census (these may not be aware of the flooding risk that they are under) · The year the houses were built (we found that this could be interesting to see if there were any houses built after 2002 in the areas affected by the flooding)

Some other variables such as insurance and so on can be found through the survey that will be carried out.

What we are planning on doing is taking all of these variables and incorporating them into one map that shows ‘vulnerability’. I am still not too clear on how this will be done, but it will be done and we will produce a map that shows vulnerability, and this vulnerability will be obtained by integrating all of the variables together that can show it (obviously with some variables having more weight then others)

We attempted to map out some of these variables but found that we are very rusty using Arc map. Though it is something I’m working on as we speak, and as soon as I get a map done I’ll throw it up here for everyone to have a look at and see if I missed anything or if it is hard to understand or whatever. The problem we are having is isolating the enumeration areas we need and also the joining of the excel documents is giving us trouble. We know it is a little small thing we’re probably over looking (it always is) and as soon as that’s figured out we’ll be flying.

If anyone has any comments, suggestions or even criticisms about any of the above please don’t hesitate to add a comment or start a thread below. It would all be much appreciated.
