WORK TO DO
We are currently in the midst of making maps, and wrestling with excel documents. below you should find two of the maps that we have made today. tell us what you think.

the historical group asked us to do up a map of the 1986 flood. they has provided us with the streets that were flood. now all we have to do is find a way of mapping it effectivly. one way that i (Danny) can see us doing this would be by getting an image from Google earth of the area and even doing something as simple as filling in the flooded areas wis MSpaint or a similar program. i'm sure ill bring this up in class on tuesday but us any thoughts you have down the bottom.
WORK COMPLETED
we ran into a small problem today with GIS when it decided not to recognize about half of the EA's. so the maps from now on will just be of the Dublin city EA, but we think it still gives us enough information to make good comparisons. and the little white spopt in the middle of the city is something that we hope to be able to fix soon

also the maps below are not the final maps. some things have to be snipped and we still have to agree on a colour scheme and on how to classify the breaks and so on, but when we figure that out the maps are very easily changed.

please tell us what you think :)

hey guys!
just wanted to ask when it would fit you best for the next meeting for creating the maps? what about monday 11 again?
and what do you think about finding a weekly time for us to meet up so that we don't have to organise it week for week again?
all the best,
manuel

i may as well get the ball rolling here if a can.

i was trying to think about what we could use to show vunrability and stuff. i was looking at the catagories on the CSO website but i couldnt find many that jumped out at me apart maybe from socio-economic status. those unemployed or with jobs that would have a lower wage may not have the resources to react when a flood happens.

it would be really good if we could get our hands on households with and without sufficiant insurance and stuff but im not too sure if that would be available.

so what does everyone think??

ant suggestions??.... feel free to slate what i just put forward... ive thick skin its gfrand :) hahaha

Yeah thoughts are good. I am thinking the survey could take care of the question of insurance. Don't think it is too personal. What annoys me is that I could go around most houses on the esate and tell their social-economic backgound by looking at the place. However this would not count of course. What is important is to understand the vast array of variants and backgrounds people in Stella Gardens come from. To do this I am suggesting the survey team interview people on a personal level about their experiences. I.e Qualitative aswell as quantitative investiagtion. For you folks on the GIS I would look at what I have suggested about comparing the two areas mapped out on the google image on the front page. I think this would allow us to compare social-economic factors with ability to act. The 2 areas are well defined ED's on the map and should be very different. I think that mapping the 2 areas would allow greater scope to incorporate the survey aspect and make telling comparisions. I.e Questions: Have you contacted your T.D about flooding in the past. I.e. Education etc. Car ownership, maybe education but could be pushing it! Really looking at how residents make Informed decisions. What you have to remember is the 2 areas are like chalk and cheese only seperated by a bridge but a long standing historical social divide. Really I think there is lots to go on here and a great story to be told from a geographer's perspective.
