Does anyone know if Google Earth are planning to improve the resolution of the satellite images for Ireland, most of Ireland is in low-res at the moment.

Just uploading some of the email discussion we have had as a group on our plans. I put it up on this so others can add in if they want.
Sophie's Email: I will have a look on the 1986 event, but obviously floods occured more along the upper Dodder than in the estuary, there is maybe not too many things to say. Let's see that... David and I are also going to meet Dr Mills on monday to speak about flood maps. It is actually very hard to find proper maps of events older than 2002. Does any of you know where we can find such documents ? We tried OPW, DCC, OSI and the UCD Library. I have attached with this mail the maps we've got for 2002. An other question : what do you guys think about writting a small part of the development of Ringsend. I have several maps from 1700, 1837, 1860, and a few maps from the 20th century , where we can see how the area grew up along the river, and then how the vulnerability was set up with time. Waiting for any comments...

i may as well get the ball rolling here if a can.
i was trying to think about what we could use to show vunrability and stuff. i was looking at the catagories on the CSO website but i couldnt find many that jumped out at me apart maybe from socio-economic status. those unemployed or with jobs that would have a lower wage may not have the resources to react when a flood happens. it would be really good if we could get our hands on households with and without sufficiant insurance and stuff but im not too sure if that would be available. so what does everyone think?? ant suggestions??.... feel free to slate what i just put forward... ive thick skin its gfrand :) hahaha

Hey guys, I've been thinking about how we could start this survey off.... How about a question like "How long have you lived in the area?"
Its informal enough and not too invasive and depending on their answer we can go down different routes. Like if they say they been there for donkey's years we can persue the whole "how well protected do you feel the area is against flooding" etc, but if they've only recently moved in then we can ask things like "were you aware of the possibility/extent of flooding in the area?" or "did the possibility of flooding detract fromo your decision to move here in any way?" etc?

Yeah thoughts are good. I am thinking the survey could take care of the question of insurance. Don't think it is too personal. What annoys me is that I could go around most houses on the esate and tell their social-economic backgound by looking at the place. However this would not count of course. What is important is to understand the vast array of variants and backgrounds people in Stella Gardens come from. To do this I am suggesting the survey team interview people on a personal level about their experiences. I.e Qualitative aswell as quantitative investiagtion. For you folks on the GIS I would look at what I have suggested about comparing the two areas mapped out on the google image on the front page. I think this would allow us to compare social-economic factors with ability to act. The 2 areas are well defined ED's on the map and should be very different. I think that mapping the 2 areas would allow greater scope to incorporate the survey aspect and make telling comparisions. I.e Questions: Have you contacted your T.D about flooding in the past. I.e. Education etc. Car ownership, maybe education but could be pushing it! Really looking at how residents make Informed decisions. What you have to remember is the 2 areas are like chalk and cheese only seperated by a bridge but a long standing historical social divide. Really I think there is lots to go on here and a great story to be told from a geographer's perspective.

can anybody tell me when the sat images are going to be updated for the whole country.
I live near Tullow co Carlow and am tired of seeig nothing but blurred images for half of the County. Considering Googles offices are in Dublin it would seem prudent to have proper imageing for the ful country!

Hi all,
Here's something weird I've spotted about google maps over the weekend. I would guess that since last update few weeks ago they changed the way counties are considered in Ireland. At the moment all area names in Dublin are gone and it is the county councils that are used instead. I've no idea who approved such change but in my opinion that is false information. For example if I live in Blackrock, County Dublin - at the moment it is called Stillorgan, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County. Its not even part of Dublin any more! Can someone else please check that and see it for yourselves? Anyone have any idea on what the process is to address this to google? Thanks
